The Sleeper Conservation Area
History & Access
This property was deeded as conservation land to the Town of Hanson in 2022 by the Sleeper Family. "Myron Sleeper and his family would like everyone to enjoy the peacefulness and beauty of this special place."
The Sleeper Conservation area is a 12+-acre woodland with trail connections to Hanson's Alton J. Smith Reserve and Pembroke's J.J Shepherd Memorial Forest, as well as the Bay Circuit Trail.
Hiking The Sleeper Trail
The full access trailhead is from the Smitty's Bog gate off Indian Head Street. To access the trail: park near the gate and kiosk at Smitty's Bog and hike parallel to Indian Head Pond toward the forested highlands. At the end of the bog side trail, you will follow Bay Circuit Trail markers to the right and up a low hill.
At the top, the Bay Circuit Trail forks right, and you will turn left at a large kiosk marking the entrance to the Sleeper Property. The main trail is an easily followed old cart path toward Maquan Street. There are a few unmarked side trails on the property as well. While it is possible to follow the old cart path to the left at another kiosk and continue on Maquan Street, this lets you out a long way from where you started. A casual hike out and back to enjoy this serene landscape is highly recommended.
