Alton J. Smith Reserve (Smitty's Bog)

About Alton J. Smith Reserve "Smitty's Bog"

This retired cranberry bog sits between Maquan Pond and Indian Head Pond. The property has a rich history as part of the area's agricultural heritage, with the cranberry bogs providing an important resource for the local community. Just up the road is Camp Kiwanee, a former scout camp now owned by the town of Hanson.

Access & Trails

From the Camp Kiwanee parking area across from the Gate Keeper's Cottage at the end of Camp Kiwanee Drive, cross the street and look for the Bay Circuit Trail and Conservation Commission markers just to the right of the Cottage. This short trail comes out onto a low bluff overlooking the bogs, offering beautiful views of the historic cranberry bog landscape.

There is also parking at the end of the dirt road that runs just past and behind the Blueberry Path Child Care facility at 364 Indian Head Street. This location has a boat ramp for access to Indian Head Pond, making it a great starting point for water activities as well as hiking.
