Conservation Commission Adopt-A-Trail Program

The Adopt-A-Trail Program is designed to allow volunteers to take responsibility for regular trail maintenance of a trail, section of trail, stream banks, adjacent roadsides or parking areas. We will provide training as appropriate to all Adopters to ensure they are trained and confident to perform their work in a safe manner.

The goal is to attract volunteers who walk a section of trail on a regular basis who are willing to perform basic clean-up and maintenance to keep that trail in great shape and inviting for our fellow citizens to enjoy.

How It Works

The program is under the supervision of the Conservation Commissioners and volunteers will report to an assigned Commissioner. The work will involve a weekly walk along "your trail" (or section of trail) in order to monitor trail conditions and report to the "Trail Supervisor" regarding conditions that require attention.

What You Won't Do

You are not responsible for Projects on the trail, and are not expected to do more than a basic weekly (or biweekly) patrol. Your time commitment is entirely up to you—an hour per week, an hour per month, or more…or less…entirely your decision.

What's Involved in a Patrol

In the course of your "patrol" you will be expected to:

  • Pick up any small trash or litter in the parking area or along the trail
  • Remove small sticks, branches or brush that may have fallen on the treadway
  • Monitor trail conditions and report any issues to your assigned Commissioner
  • Larger maintenance activities or trail improvements will be managed by the Commission on an as needed basis

Friends of the Trails Program

Friends of the Trails will be able to volunteer for Work Days according to their interest and skill levels, for seasonal clean-ups, trail improvement projects and new trail development projects.

This program offers a more hands-on approach for those interested in larger scale trail maintenance and improvement initiatives. Whether you prefer to work independently as an Adopt-A-Trail volunteer or collaborate with others on special projects, there's an opportunity that fits your interests.

Volunteer Opportunities Include

  • Seasonal trail clean-ups
  • Trail improvement projects
  • New trail development
  • Special conservation initiatives
  • Work days coordinated by skill level and interest
